75-year-old Trikke Skki enthusiast: I had a blast!

75-year-old Trikke Skki enthusiast: I had a blast!

John Earle loves the Trikke Skki most winters and this year was no exception. Here’s what he shared with us about his most recent adventure on the slopes of Winter Park, Colorado:

I skkied four consecutive days and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. For me, the trip’s highlight was the fulfillment of a goal to Skki in one run, all the way from the very top of the resort to the resort base. On Tuesday, February 16, I was able to do this.

To get to the top required riding up four different lifts, plus traversing other slopes and runs between them. The whole process, including riding the lifts, skkiing to the next lift, etc., and then skkiing all the way down, took nearly 1.5 hours. The downward run itself was much quicker.

According to a sports tracker app on my phone, the run itself covered over seven miles of terrain, a vertical drop from 12,000 to 9,000 feet, and had a momentary top speed of 34MPH.

I am 75 years old. It was a blast!

In the picture, I’m in the red jacket. The person with me in the white jacket is my younger daughter Amy, age 45. We went together on my long run. The first two pictures were taken at the very top, just above 12,000 feet. The third one, as titled, is about 70% of the way down where we stopped for a quick breather.

Living his best life on three wheels

There’s no shortage of inspirational stories of how Trikke carving vehicles have transformed the lives of some very inspired and inspiring people. After all, one need look no further than the Trikke Tales of the rider who went from super disabled to Supergirl, thanks to her Trikke, or the rider who went from tragedy to triumph on a Trikke, to bear witness to the endurance of the human spirit, as expressed through one’s love and appreciation of the Trikke.

Alexandre de Carvalho Lage is one such person we’re happy to introduce to you. Not only is his life story phenomenal, so, too, is his unique perspective on the Trikke, both as an exercise machine and a modern-day tool for urban transportation and mobility. In this two-part, special feature, we’ll get to know the man, his back story and his views of the curious topic of Trikke vs. the Scooter Craze, i.e., Lime, Bird and the plethora of electric scooters invading cities worldwide.

“The Trikke … works more muscles in a healthier way than any other exercise.”

A native of Brazil, Alex had an active childhood. As a teen, he used to surf world-famous Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Then at age 23, he had an uncommon accident while driving a 9-ton tractor during a vacation on a farm. Due to brake failure, the tractor ran over him, breaking his pelvis into four pieces and affecting his urethra and bladder.

Suddenly, his life dream became “taking a shower while standing on my own two feet.”
Barely able to move, Alex’s recovery process was long and stressful. He endured twenty-two surgeries, months-at-a-time in hospitals, and countless doctor appointments, medicines and physical therapy hours. Amazingly, after four years, he was able to resume a normal life.

It’s no wonder a person with that kind of spirit and determination was drawn to the Trikke, which Alex first saw at age 49:

“I was living in Curitiba (the birth city of Trikke inventor Gildo Beleski), working as a consultant, when I saw the Trikke in a shopping mall demonstration. It was love at first sight! I had to find out what it was all about it, and in two days, I was riding my first new toy.”

First time I saw a Trikke in Dec 2006
Next day I purchased my Trikke
Participate in an event in Curitiba, Brazil 2007

Since then, Alex says the Trikke has become part of his ecosystem.

“I felt how important it was, not only for my recovery but also to push my own limits. I rediscovered the radical surfer in me. Then I developed my own riding style. It felt like surfing the waves.”

Some fourteen years later, Alex still has what he calls a great passion for Trikke:

“For me, riding a Trikke is more than just getting exercise or using a fitness machine. Riding is part of my health regimen, just like eating, drinking, sleeping, or even stretching. It’s been part of my daily routine every week, at least three times a week.”

The biggest benefit, he says, is the fact that a full-body workout on a three-wheel Trikke is a powerful form of exercise:

“The Trikke carving motion gives you a better stretch over skating and is more intense than surfing. It works more muscles in a healthier way than any other exercise. I can easily burn 1,000 calories in one hour-long ride.”

Because Alex monitors his rides with his Apple Watch, his doctors and fitness trainers are able to observe the data generated by each ride. The result: they’re amazed by his results.

“I just turned 61 and I feel like I have the body of a 42-year-old man. Plus, I can really say (and prove) that Trikke is the most important reason I feel this way.”

All of this may make Alex seem like a salesman for Trikke carving vehicles, but the resident of Rio de Janeiro has no official job with Trikke, Inc.

“I’d say I’m an informal ‘take it to the limit pilot.’ I have an aggressive riding style and I’m always testing different models to the limit.”

Additionally, Alex has decades of experience as a consultant and developer for new business models and that’s where his unique perspective comes into play when it comes to Trikkes vs Scooters, a topic we’ll explore with this inspirational individual in part two of this special feature.

For spectacular Trikke Tours, meet me in St. Louis

For spectacular Trikke Tours, meet me in St. Louis

From the Gateway Arch, that iconic symbol of American expansion, to the sprawling historic public space known as Forest Park, to the Cardinals, the Blues and the Anheuser Busch Brewery, there’s no Midwest city on the Mississippi River quite like St. Louis, the next stop in our periodic segment highlighting Trikke Tours the world over.

Whether you’ve never been to the Gateway City or are a lifelong resident, taking a Trikke tour on a three-wheel, light electric vehicle is a great way to see St. Louis, according to Trikke STL Guided Tours, a mobile company operating seasonal tours from March through mid-November. So what happens on a Trikke tour of Missouri’s largest metropolitan area? Here’s what your tour guides at Trikke STL Guided Tours had to say in our Q&A:

Q: What are the advantages of taking a Trikke tour, as opposed to other kinds of tours, including walking tours, bus tours and bike tours?
A: This is not your same old walking/bus riding/”are we done yet” tour! Since Trikkes have a stable, three-wheel base of support, they are simple to get started on and have a quick learning curve. Ease of use = Less training. Basic bicycle-riding knowledge transfers quickly to the new rider, and electric Trikkes are very intuitive and easy to control. Forget crowded sightseeing tours and busses! Come with us to discover the Gateway City, or just ride around and have the most fun ever! You won’t have to worry about being hunched over handlebars, chafing your posterior on a seat, or craning your neck to see in front of you. The electric Trikke Pon-e is “clean and green,” leaving minimal impact on the riding surface. They are battery powered and emit zero emissions. They are also very quiet, so they don’t disturb wildlife or the public. Trikkes are blazing the green trail with technology that’s 100% green!

“…take selfies with the Gateway Arch, ride out over the Mississippi River…”

Q: What kind of people are best suited for Trikke tours?
A: While guests find our electric Trikkes to be especially easy to ride, all riders must be able to perform such tasks as going up and down stairs without assistance. You must be able to stand on the Trikke for the length of the tour. No Trikke riding is experience necessary. A comprehensive training and practice session is provided prior to each tour. The Trikke is incredibly stable, safe and can be mastered in a few minutes. Riders should also be reasonably acclimated to outdoor activities and able to tolerate sun, heat and humidity. Trikke STL Guided Tours reserves the right to decline a rider if we determine there’s a safety issue.

Q: What are some of the things one might see on a St. Louis Trikke tour?
A: Whether you’ve never been to St. Louis or have lived here your whole life, this is a great way to see the city. Depending on the tour, you can take selfies with the Gateway Arch, ride out over the Mississippi River on the Eads Bridge, visit the Enterprise Center, home of the St. Louis Blues hockey team, or Busch Stadium, home of the 11-time World Champion St. Louis Cardinals and the new Ballpark Village. Then there’s the city’s “crown jewel,” Forest Park, featuring the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum and the St. Louis Science Center, home of the 1904 World’s Fair.

Other notable sites on the tours we offer include the Anheuser Busch Brewery and Soulard Farmers Market, as well as two of St. Louis’ oldest and most charming neighborhoods, Soulard and Lafayette Square, with their Victorian mansions and much more. At Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum – the other history museum with over 87,000 graves — we explore the lives — and hear the famous and infamous stories – of folks like explorer William Clark (of Lewis and Clark), Anheuser Busch founder Adolphus Busch, US Senator Thomas Hart Benton and author William S. Burroughs.

Q: Is riding an electric Trikke for a Trikke tour easy for most people to learn?
A: Yes! It takes very little time to become proficient on a Trikke. As long as you can stand up, you can ride a Trikke. However, unexpected and unfortunate things can and do occasionally happen, and you should be aware that you will be riding at your own risk. If you follow your tour guide’s instructions, wear the provided safety helmet, pay attention to yourself, others and your surrounding area, and use common sense, your tour will be safe, comfortable, and fun. We will patiently work with you until you are sufficiently proficient on your Trikke and safety is always emphasized.

Q: What kinds of reactions do you get from people who have been on your Trikke tours?
A: We always have people stop and ask “what are those?” Often, those same people come and do a tour with us, especially after hearing from others how fun and easy-to-ride the Trikke is.

Q: Are Trikke tours good for groups or organizations?
A: We do team builders and specialized tours for larger groups, and we strive to have a personal approach to the group or event.

Q: What are some of your favorite stops along your Trikke tour?
A: The St. Louis Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, the Anheuser Busch Brewery, so many in Forest Park.

Q: How old do you have to be to go on a Trikke tour?
A: 10 to 101. Anyone under 18 must be attended by a parent or guardian, no exceptions!

Q: Anything else you would like to add about your particular Trikke tour?
A: We are a mobile company operating our seasonal tours from the first day of spring in March through mid-November. We transport our innovative three-wheeled electric Trikke fleet to many Greater St Louis locations. Being mobile affords our patrons unlimited and never-ending choices of locations from which to “carve” on our Trikkes.

After operating as tour guides for other guided tours in the St Louis area and also being members of the Professional Tour Guide Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (PTGSTL), we were looking for new ways to add to the touring experience. We found Trikke — simply the coolest, portable, electric-powered carving vehicles on the planet.

Our guides are also certified Trikke trainers and instruct you on how to properly operate your Trikke, making sure that you are comfortable and confident in no time. Our tour guides tell you fun facts about each site and are willing to snap photos for you. You will have an amazing time learning about the city while having a blast on the Trikke.

In Raleigh, NC, tourists prefer Trikke Tours over Segway

For the next stop in our periodic segment highlighting Trikke Tours the world over, we travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, home of Carolina Touring Company (former Triangle Glides), which after 10 years in operation, has firmly decided that touring the city on a three-wheel light electric vehicle provides for a more engaging experience than touring on a Segway. Here’s what else your Carolina Touring tour guides had to say about their tours in our Q&A:

Q: What are the advantages of taking a Trikke tour, as opposed to other kinds of tours?
A: We operated Segway tours for 10 years and we find that Trikkes are not only easier to learn how to ride, but they are genuinely more fun! The Segway is very linear and typically travels in a straight line from point A to B. However, gliding on a Trikke offers a more active and dynamic touring experience, so you feel more connected to your environment.

Q: What kind of people are best suited for Trikke tours?
A: Anyone with a spirit for adventure! Almost anyone can learn to ride an electric Trikke.

“A favorite activity for our groups is our signature Trikke Treasure Hunts … it’s a blast!”

Q: What are some of the things people might see on a Trikke tour that they might not see on other tours of Raleigh?
A: When you’re on an electric Trikke, you can go much farther than you can on a walking tour, but with the same ability to get up close to landmarks, just like you could on foot. It’s the best of both worlds!

Q: What kinds of reactions do you get from people who have been on your Trikke tour?
A: The feedback from our Trikke guests has been phenomenal. We switched over from Segways to Trikkes a year ago and overwhelmingly, our guests have said they like it better than the Segways. It’s just a more fun and active experience that keeps you continually engaged.

Q: Are Trikke tours good for groups or organizations?
A: Absolutely! Our tours attract a lot of corporate groups. Riding a Trikke makes for a great team-building activity because it’s new and different for most people, so there’s a feeling of accomplishment and excitement. A favorite activity for our groups is our signature Trikke Treasure Hunts, which combine solving clues, finding hidden treasure caches, and riding from point to point on the Trikkes while being led by our expert guides. It’s a blast!

Q: What are some of your favorite stops along your Trikke tour?
A: We offer six different Trikke tours in our downtown Raleigh location, so even if you’ve taken a tour with us before, you can come back and experience a whole different tour next time. Some highlights include the North Carolina State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, the historic district of Oakwood and our trendy Warehouse District.

Q: How old do you have to be to go on a Trikke tour?
A: The minimum age on our Trikke tours is 14 years old.

Q: Anything else you would like to add about Carolina Touring Company?
A: We take pride in being the very first Trikke tour company in the world to offer the new Trikke 2WD electric model for touring. As a company, we’re always seeking out the most innovative forms of touring, and Trikke is it! So if you want to try something new that’ll get you outdoors and discovering new things and cool stories of historic Raleigh, come on out and join one of our tours! Our tours include hands-on training, live narration and audio for each guest, plus we offer the convenience of online booking from our website.
